BUSINESS CONSULTING

A business consultant for growing businesses and startups.

Business consulting is the CairnsCom service for growing businesses and startups that need the whole revenue engine built or fixed: positioning, systems, sales, and marketing, joined up and pointed at revenue. I am Tom Cairns, a business consultant working from Dallas, Texas and Valencia, Spain with owners and leadership teams across the US, UK, and EU. Established businesses come to me when growth has stalled and the pieces do not connect. Startups come to me to build the engine from zero, which I have done myself, taking one from a small office to 200-plus people.
Dallas, Texas and Valencia, Spain  ·  Serving the US, UK, and EU
I have done the zero-to-hero build myself, not just advised on it.
I helped grow Operatix from a small office to more than 200 people, built outbound engines from a standing start, opened new markets from zero pipeline, and supported a capital raise. I know what actually breaks as a company scales, and what to build before it does, because I have been in the room when it happened. That is the difference between a consultant who hands over a framework and one who has lived the messy reality of taking a business from almost nothing to something that runs.
WHAT I DO

The whole engine, not one part of it.

Most growing businesses buy a single service when the real problem is that the pieces do not connect. I work across all of them, so the engine actually runs end to end.

Strategy & Positioning

Who you are for, the problem you own, and the path to revenue, made concrete enough to build on and pitch.

Systems From Scratch

The CRM, tooling, and process a young company needs to operate professionally and scale without breaking.

Sales Engine

Building and training the first real sales motion, so pipeline is repeatable rather than founder-dependent.

Marketing Foundation

Search, AI visibility, and demand generation that get you found by the right buyers from day one.

Go-To-Market

A clear plan to enter or expand a market, informed by having opened new markets from zero.

Investor Readiness

The traction, metrics, and story that make a business credible to investors, drawn from real capital-raise experience.
WHY A GENERALIST BEATS A SPECIALIST HERE

Early stage rewards range, not silos.

A large company can afford a specialist for every function. A startup cannot, and more importantly should not, because at the early stage the bottleneck moves week to week. One month it is positioning, the next it is the CRM, the next it is the first hire on the phones. A systems-and-patterns mind that can see and work the whole picture is exactly what that stage needs, which is why I lean into being multitalented rather than a master of one thing. A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one, and never more so than when you are building from scratch.
It also means you get one accountable person across the engine instead of three vendors who each blame the others. I do what I am good at, use the right tools for the rest, and keep the whole thing pointed at revenue and runway.

HOW IT WORKS

Find the bottleneck. Build the next piece.

Diagnose
I look at the whole business and find the one or two things actually holding growth back right now.
Prioritize
We build in the order that creates momentum and protects runway, not a textbook sequence.
Build
Positioning, systems, sales, or marketing, whatever the engine needs next, built and not just advised.
Scale
Once the engine runs, we turn the dial up on what works and keep the whole thing pointed at revenue.
WHO NEEDS THIS

For owners at a standing start, or stuck at a ceiling.

This is for the owner of an established business whose growth has stalled: marketing that does not produce pipeline, a CRM that does not capture the right data, sales that depend on one or two people, and a stack of tools that do not connect. It is also for founders who have something real but no engine around it: a product that works and a few customers, but growth that depends entirely on the founder and no repeatable way to win clients. If you need one experienced operator to build or fix the whole thing with you rather than a single service bolted on the side, this is the engagement, and it is the same work that turned small offices into acquired companies. If being found is the first gap, start with online visibility; if you want senior marketing leadership on an ongoing retainer once the engine exists, see fractional CMO services.
COMMON QUESTIONS

Business consulting, answered plainly.

What does a business consultant do at CairnsCom?

Builds or fixes the whole revenue engine for a growing business: positioning and strategy, the systems and CRM underneath, a repeatable sales motion, and the marketing that feeds it. For an established business that usually starts with finding where growth is leaking. For a startup it starts from zero. I look at the entire business, because that is where companies get stuck.

Have you actually scaled a startup?

Yes. I helped take Operatix from a small office to 200-plus people, built sales engines from a standing start, opened new markets from zero, and supported a roughly four million dollar capital raise. I have done the build, not just advised on it.

Is this the same as a fractional CMO or CRO?

It overlaps. Business consulting is broader and earlier-stage, building the whole engine. A fractional CMO or CRO engagement is ongoing leadership once the engine exists. Many startups begin here and grow into that.

Can you help with go-to-market and fundraising?

Yes. I help plan and execute go-to-market for a new product or market, and can build the traction, metrics, and story that make a startup credible to investors, from real capital-raise experience.

What does business consulting cost?

A monthly retainer scaled to the work, not a salary, or a fixed price for a defined project. I share the figure after a short call, once I know where growth is leaking and what actually needs doing. Most engagements start with the one or two things that will move the needle first, so you are never sold work you do not need.

A thirty minute call is enough to see what is missing in your engine and what to build or fix first. No pitch deck, no pressure.
